Porcelain Veneers Explained
Dental veneers can be made from resin composite materials or dental porcelain. Although slightly more expensive than composite dental veneers, porcelain veneers are often preferred for their translucent quality and ability to reflect light in a similar way to your natural teeth.
Porcelain veneers are small, thin pieces of dental porcelain that are custom-fitted and shaded for your tooth. Utilizing a concept similar to fake fingernails, the porcelain sheaths are shaped and smoothed to create a natural-looking tooth cover for your tooth.
Placement Process
Porcelain veneers fit snugly on the front of teeth, requiring only conservative preparation and minimal tooth reduction. They can be placed in as little as two visits!
During your first visit to our Walnut Creek dental office, Dr. Pope will take a mold of your teeth to determine the exact shape of the veneers. After seven to ten days, you will return to Pope Dental to have your custom-created porcelain applied to your teeth.
After being bonded to your teeth using dental cement, your dental veneers will look, feel, and function just like your own teeth, creating a natural-looking smile.
Problems Fixed by Dental Veneers
Dental veneers can produce beautiful, long-lasting results that correct for various dental problems, including:
- Slight misalignment of front teeth
- Stains and discolorations
Good Dental Veneer Candidate
If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your teeth and you enjoy good dental health, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers.
However, if you grind or clench your teeth – especially to the point that it causes a TMJ disorder – you may not be a good candidate, since the additional stress from the clenching could cause the porcelain veneers to crack or break.
Also, if your teeth are excessively misaligned or decayed, porcelain veneers may not be the best treatment for you. After a comprehensive dental exam, Dr. Pope will be able to explain the pros and cons of dental veneers based on your specific needs.
